Is calling a person FAT wrong?
As I sat in the coffee shop sipping my comforting black filter coffee I relaxed in the comfortable armchair and looked around my surrounding and took in all that was going on.
There were a group of what looked like friends sitting at a table behind me sitting tucking into sandwiches and cakes as well as enjoying their coffees, hot chocolates and teas. I could hear their conversation loud and clear. One of the ladies lifted a scone that was filled with jam and cream, “I shouldn't really she” said as she stuffed the first mouthful in “I’m back at the fat club tomorrow” The much slimmer lady sitting next to her, smiled and touched her several rolls on her tummy gently and said “its okay sister, just go to the toilet for a quick pee first and you will have lost a pound” The rest of the ladies laughed.
I glanced over and saw the hurt in the larger woman’s eyes. She was smiling however I could see that she was doing her very best to hide all behind that beautiful smile.
Another member of the table piped up as she stretched over for a goodie and said how she had put on weight herself. Said called herself fat. She said her hubby called her his little barrel with love handles and whilst she didn’t mind it knew it was time to do something about losing the weight and getting fitter. She commented on how it was ok to call herself fat but got really hurt or offended if anyone else called her fat.
Sipping my coffee I reflected on their conversation. Yes FAT is a word, but how we use it can be hurtful at times. We need to be careful. It could get to the stage of bullying if not used properly. With words like fat please use it appropriately. People who don’t think should not talk- No?
